day 17 - green (of course)

L - iphone / T- iphone

Funny that we both shot looking down - and chose nature's green to photograph.
It was a perfectly beautiful spring day today. I couldn't resist buying a few plants when I went to purchase the cedar chips for my walkways. Did you set out new spring plants this weekend?

lush fresh juiciness of blackberries and plush green softness of moss - these are the luxuries of summer.

Happy May Day!

solo post - L , Nikon

Sing a song of spring on the first day of May.

"Let's twitter and tweet
Like the birdies in May
Get into the mood
And be merry today
Forget all your troubles and warble away
Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do
Oh!"
- Bambi soundtrack

I hope your day was beautiful and bright.

a little pouche / a knapsack

L - Nikon / T - Canon

Metalsmithing is my past time these days (I finally got my studio set up at home) and as a result I haven't been taking photos - I haven't even done any blogging lately. But I did take this photo last Thursday because I wanted to share it with you. Isn't this the cutest little bunny purse? I ordered it from a fabulous designer on etsy. Taylor liked it so much I think she's going to want to borrow it sometime. I love etsy. About this time of year I start looking on there with gifts in mind. I think maybe other people do too... so I'm hoping to add some of the rings I've been making to my shop real soon. Do you do have an etsy site? Do you have any tips for getting customers? / i was looking for my knapsack today and this is where i found it. behind the curtain... with bunny.

cool shade / cool rain

L - Nikon / T - Nikon

Taylor's back, at least for a day, and I really love the photo she sent me. It speaks of shelter, fresh, spring, protection, cool breezes, etc - just like my image does - synchronicity?
It was an unusually hot day for the first of May. I was walking around my back yard looking at the changes of growth... the ferns have all unfurled; the wild azaleas have faded - the rhododendrons are now in full bloom; the red buds are full of beautiful heart shaped leaves and little pods hang off the branches; the hydrangeas are budding out and the shasta daisies leaves look healthy. I stopped and sat on my little red bench to enjoy the shade of the beech tree and looked up - layers upon layers of new green that will provide a welcomed shade in the heat of summer. I love this tree – in all the seasons. / monday morning and the rain is a welcome relief from the heat of the weekend. problem is, it made me want to stay in bed and sleep! i guess the good part was that it kept me inside for the majority of the day- essentially guilting me into my school work (studying for finals now) since i had nothing more exciting to do with my time.

Live Greener

T - digital montage

"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. " - Native American proverb

Taylor and I are trying to live greener one simple green step at a time. It's not easy and we are having to change our ways and be reminded of steps we can take - remembering that every little action helps. It's a mind-set, a lifestyle and I have to admit that I am not always conscious of it.
I got a great little book for Christmas last year from my nephew to help me. It's called "The Little Green Handbook - 145 Simple Steps to Save the Planet". It's full of gentle reminders and new tips for living green, in and away from home. Putting into practice all these little things can add up and if we will all just do what we can we will leave the earth a better place for our children, and their children and so on - Small changes can make a big difference.
A few things I try to remember to do are:
- carry by reusable grocery bag with me
- use a reusable coffee mug instead of getting a paper cup each visit
- reuse the water from the dehumidifier for plants needing water outside
- turn off the water while I brush my teeth
- turn the lights off when I leave the room, always
- unplug appliances (easy enough to do but I don't do it often)
- wash clothes in cold water
- use the dishwasher, instead of washing by hand, letting them dry naturally
- use cloth towels instead of paper napkins, always
- burn soy candles
- use cast iron skillet instead of teflon coated
these are just a few I can think of at the moment.
What's one thing you are currently doing in an attempt to live greener?

Indeed it's not always easy being green. Happy Earth Day!

yellow / green

L - Nikon / T - Nikon

The color of the week is yellow green. How appropriate. There is new growth all around us. I love this time of the year when the colors of green in the horizon are so varied. But I don't love the haze of yellow green that's in the air - it hangs in the air like a thick cloud and covers everything like a yellow blanket! The pollen count in Atlanta yesterday was 5733 - 120+ is considered extremely high. What? Well, thank goodness we've had a nice rain today to wash it all away. As I look out my office window now, the clouds have lifted and the world is clean and fresh looking, the pavement is grey again instead of pale yellow and once again you can tell that I drive a white car not a yellow one. / i came home yesterday to go to a concert. i had lunch with mom and i also got a haircut, finally. i needed one badly but now it seems so short to me. p.s. there is pollen everywhere, on everything. my green yellow car is now yellow green.

green / tree

L - Nikon / T - Nikon

Happy Spring everyone. Hope your day was filled with new delight.

When I bought this car 13 years ago I immediately fell in love with the color. Many people think it's an awlful color but to me it is the color a Japanese maple leaf in spring time. That's how I describe it anyway - Jeep calls it Citron Green. Taylor drives it now and she loves it too. It's almost a one-of-a-kind. As long as we've had it we could count on one hand the amount of times we've seen another one just like it - anywhere. Taylor wants to drive her Kirby forever. She says it just fits who she is. And I'd say it does - unique.
I feel so lucky - she has been home two weekends in a row. I bought her tickets to see Spoon at the Tabernacle, but she also wanted to shoot some more film for her assignment. It's a project on color so first we drove down to Cabbage Town where the homes are bright and crazy colors, and to Little Five Points were the graffiti walls add color to otherwise rundown buildings. It was a gorgeous sunny 75 and we enjoyed being outside together. We ate at Flip (a unique burger joint) to end the day before she headed to the concert.
Since we were together we decided to look at our photos of the day and pick two to post, together. I chose the Jeep because I had planned to use it on a post at Lensustogether and when we saw the one she took of the tree and the green wall in Cabbage Town they seem meant for each other. When she first saw that wall she said, "hey look they're painting it Kirby green" and took a photo - not knowing that I had shot the photo of her car behind our maple tree earlier in the day.
Two 'spring greens' behind bare trees waiting for their new leaves.

she didn't have time to write her portion

Happy St. Patrick's day

L - Nikon / T - Nikon

St. Patrick's Day is an enchanted time - a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic. ~Adrienne Cook

Did you wear your green today? I'm not Irish but I always wear green on this day. I have a nice spring green raincoat and it just happened to be raining today so I was covered - in more ways than one. Remember the days of young when you might get pinched at school if you didn't wear green?
I see Taylor wore green too. I told her about bench mondays and she sent me this today. She's a little early with it but that's ok because just look. I am smiling again - just saying... greens, yellow, hands, feet, up, down... love.
Hope your day was cheery and bright.

If only it were a four leaf clover and not a daffodil.
If you hold a four-leaf shamrock in your left hand at dawn on St. Patrick's Day you get what you want very much but haven't wished for. ~Patricia Lynch

little deer / dear one

L - post / T - photos

I've been holding on to this image for bench monday. So since T is away without internet for a day or two I decided to post her photos myself. I love so many of the photos posted to the flickr group but I always forget about taking my own. I think there's something so mysterious about just seeing the a portion of someone. These little legs, a peek of an eye... These are part of the series of photos T took of my little niece. I did some processing to the one on the chair – gave it a softening effect that is rather fitting I think and posted it to the Bench Monday group. I love the coloring in this series - monotone with a pop of green.

summer greens

L - NikonD60 / T - Nikon D40x Sigma 30mm lens

I'm so glad we did our photoshoot the other day. This nice grass field is now gone - cut to the ground – no more whispy wonderful grass. / i help my oma with a photoshoot of a little boy today. she usually takes the photos herself but since i was here i helped. i have to say we had a hard time getting him to relax – he didn't pose like a natural 6 yr old boy.

9am / 5pm

solo post - L, Nikon D60

These photos don't really represent my day but it's all I have in the way of photos.
I started out the morning with boot camp and then headed to Athens. Before I left, I noticed that my roses were starting to bloom. I'm not really a huge rose lover but I do like roses when they are still in bud form - and of course they smell wonderful.
I went up to Athens today to pack T's belongings for coming home. Freshman year is already over. It's hard for me to believe the year went by so quickly. We loaded my car up and then walked to town for an Indie craft show - Craftstravaganza. T was asked to photograph the event. The weather was crazy - one minute a downpour, the next the sun was shining. I felt sorry for the vendors. Except that when the rain would come of course we headed for tents and of course looked around - 2 of those 'run for covers' I made purchases. So maybe it didn't hurt them too bad afterall. It was a small show but some very nice work. I wished I'd had more money. The rain made it hard for T to photograph so hopefully the weather will be nicer tomorrow.
On the way up to Athens I had noticed a quaint little church with a tin roof, so I made note to stop by there on the way back home. I drove up the long gravel road leading to the church but it was pouring down rain at this point so I didn't get any good photos there. The grasses you see above where in front of the church – I took this photo from the car. Aren't these plants cool looking? To me they look like gold and pink sequins (you will have to click on image to enlarge in order to see what I'm talking about). Does anyone know the name of this plant? Is it a grass?

green / grin

L - iphone pic at work / T - phone pic at dorm
A lot of women have a weakness for shoes - I have to admit I have a weakness for coats. Spring is almost here, yet I bought a new coat last weekend. Well it's still cold outside and isn't this a great spring color? / yeah for packages in the mail! i got a belated birthday gift today from my friend who is at the college of charleston. we have always created playlist cds for each others birthday - i'm glad she didn't break the tradition, and she sent this cool alice in wonderland plate? (when i did my alice in wonderland series photos she posed as the cheshire cat for me.)

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Tin Drum / Kirby

Had lunch with my friend Trevor at Tin Drum today. The Cripsy Chicken Salad with ginger dressing is so yummy. Talked of dreams of travel and how so many of the young people in our office are going to all these exotic places - Japan, Greece, Eygpt, Scotland, China... Guess they are just foot-loose and fancy-free. Well, now is my time. I wish to go to Greece or Provence for my 50th. / kirby is sick. i don't know what to do ]: kirby can't die on me. kirby is my beloved, hand-me-down 1996 green jeep
