segments / dividing my time

Nikon D40x / phone pic

I have a question... How do you prepare your grapefruit for eating? Every year at Christmas we get a huge box of pink grapefruit as a gift - they are SO delicious and we look forward to this shipment each year. So at Christmas, when we are all together, we serve up grapefruit for breakfast. Sometimes I am the one preparing the grapefruit and sometimes it's my mom who does it. She cuts hers one way and I cut mine another way. She claims her way is better - sometimes even saying my way is "wrong" - kidding of course. This morning I tried it her way - cutting all the way around the half, separating the pulp from the skin and then cutting from the center to the outside, separating each triangle segment. It's probably the proper way, but I prefer my way. I cut each individual triangle segment leaving the membrane attached to the skin. I think I just like the repetition of it - going around each triangle, one by one -then I put a little sugar on it. Does it really matter? : ) How ever you slice it up, it taste delicious! / today it was so mild outside - it felt good to be outdoors at my neighborhood starbucks again. before i start dividing up all my time to spend with everyone on my list i took a little time to just be with myself and my drawing journal and my favorite starbucks drink - soy chai latte, no water. it was nice.

soy chai latte is my favourite.

grapefruit is a family favourite in this world. we cut ours like your mom. we use honey and cinnamon instead of sugar and then we bake it in the oven for 20 min at 180 degrees celcius. just delicious! let me know what you think if you try it : )

ah we carve out each section with a special knife...mr elk eats them like oranges too...nice shot of yours

Growing up, my parents had special spoons with jagged edges to scoop out each section. Maybe peeling it like an orange would be fun. It's been awhile since I had one and I am not sure why!

Hmm.. starbucks! I eat them like an orange. Except when I bake them. Then I slice them in half and slice into each triangle with a paring knife and serve with a pointed spoon. ; )

I'd have to have a lot of sugar on any grapefruit I ate...

Claire's version might work for me, but I'd rather have a cookie.

I do like your photo though...interesting mix of lines and shapes.

I don't eat them. Too sour. Jeffrey loves them, though. Sorry. He cuts them like your Mom.

Sorry I don't like grapefruit at all so I have no preference. :)

Starbucks however, Yummy!

ok, i'm crazy with the grapefruit, so don't listen to me. i would love nothing more than to eat an entire box of grapefruit over the course of about 3 days.

i peel them. then i eat them. no sugar.

i told you, i'm crazy with the grapefruit.

i kinda like that question :) i bet that there are more ways to cut a grapefruit than there are to skin a cat... i learned how from a chef. i worked as a waitress while going to graduate school and he showed me what i thought was the best way ever and i have done it that way ever since. you stand the grapefruit on end and using a largish very sharp knife you skin the rind and membrane all the way around, slicing downward and getting as much of the membrane off as you can with each stroke. keep at it until all you have left is a naked grapefruit. then you hold that in your hand and slice each segment away form it's home, skinless and perfectly juicy. it all goes into a beautiful clear bowl. then we add a little sugar.

i have been away from your blog for too long!
